How We Came to Be – A History of Novō Adventures

5 Jun 2023

Launched in 2019, Novō Adventures has been running motorcycle tours for half a decade, all over Bolivia (and even into Argentina). On the backs of Royal Enfield Himalayans, we’ve traversed this country many times and yet always find new things to enjoy, new discoveries to explore, and new challenges to overcome. It’s been a wild journey so far, and we love seeing people use their holiday to experience the majestic and diverse geography of Bolivia, as well as helping those in need.

Our beginnings

Novō Adventures was founded as an offshoot of the work of Novō Communities – a residential rehabilitation program with a centre in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. The work of Novō Communities began in 2015 to provide a vital service for men caught in addiction in the developing world.

A new need

As Novō Communities grew, and the Quinta Totaices rehabilitation centre in Santa Cruz grew, so did its need for funding. The vision of Novō Communities was to be replicable across the developing world, and to that end a new source of income generation was required. This sparked the initial idea to create what would become Novō Adventures.

Establishing the enterprise

The founders of Novō Communities loved motorcycling and had often taken motorcycle trips around Bolivia. And at the same time as they were exploring options to generate income for the rehab, a motorcycle touring company in Bolivia was looking to sell their business. Funding was raised to purchase the existing company, move it to Santa Cruz, and thus Novō Adventures was born.

Growing pains

Despite starting from an established business, a steep learning curve was ahead of the fledgling social enterprise. Of course, simply guiding a tour and managing all the twists and turns required is a massive undertaking!

But no sooner had we begun to feel comfortable guiding groups did civil unrest across the country cancel several of our booked tours. Nearly immediately after the protests ended, the COVID-19 global pandemic descended, shutting down all but the most essential international travel across the world — echoes of which can still be felt today

International Travel in 2023

Despite the global health emergency from COVID-19 being declared “over”, travel is still slow to restart to pre-covid numbers, and has only just begun to return to the normalcy we saw in 2019. We hope to continue to see growth in the international travel industry, and indeed have seen a massive upturn in both inquiries and booked tours in the 2023 season.

To the future

Though tourism, and especially international tourism, took a massive hit over the course of the pandemic, Novō Adventures has weathered the storm, coming into 2023 with one of the strongest years we’ve ever seen.

We’re here to help people have the best experience of Bolivia possible – not to maximise profits – and use this business to help those in need have a chance to be free from addiction.

Worldwide goal

Novō’s vision was always to be replicable, and to that end we hope to be able to see new Communities & Adventures locations springing up hand in hand where the need arises, whether this be through partnerships with local providers or starting new businesses from scratch.

How you can help

Choosing to holiday with Novō Adventures means several things:

  • Your trip will be led by experienced guides who believe in the work of Novō. Our guides and mechanic have had years of experience guiding clients across Bolivia and navigating the inevitable challenges that crop up on a trip!
  • You will experience one of South America’s most interesting and least modernised countries. Bolivia is one of the last places in the world that can boast real adventure, from the Death Road to the Salar de Uyuni and all the less known places in between.
  • Your holiday money is going to a good cause. Our profits are all donated to Novō Communities, so you can take a world class adventure and help those in need at the same time.
